Mbeki had it coming

The dramatic resignation of Thabo Mbeki as South African president on Sunday had long been telegraphed. The overwhelming vote of no confidence that he suffered at the African National Congress (ANC) conference at Polokwane last December was a clear message that his time is up. Earlier, a majority of South African provinces had sent him a similar message. Yet he failed to see the gathering tide.

That is until last week when the party told him to take a walk. He should not have waited this long. The good news is that he was smart enough to surrender without resistance. Refusing to budge could have only exposed him to further humiliation in Parliament and the party.
