Match-fixing should be nipped in the bud

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) is reported to have suspended Mogoditshane Fighters for engaging in match-fixing. The team is reported to have given away a game to Jwaneng Comets in the Premier League promotion play-offs over the weekend.

What raised suspicion is the 12-2 win by Comets, a side that had just been walloped 5-2 by Fighters in the midweek. Under normal circumstances, the 12-2 result may not raise eyebrows. After all, football is about putting the ball in the net and if a team legitimately does so 12 times, then that is what will be recorded. However, in the Fighters-Comets game, the football authorities found something amiss about the results and the circumstances in which the record haul of goals were scored.

We think the current developments in our football should make anyone who is interested in the improvement of our game concerned. However it is becoming obvious that as more funds are pumped into the game, there will be challenges such as match-fixing and other unethical practices. This is because more elements associated with the game will seek to make a quick buck out of the lucrative business of football.
