Long live Gaborone!

This past Saturday, BaTlokwa gathered at their main kgotla for the formal inauguration of their kgosi, Pule Gaborone. The highlight of the ceremony was the investiture of the King with the leopard skin, the ultimate symbol of royal raiment and of sovereignty. And thus Kgosi Gaborone joined the esteemed realm of those who wear the crown. But ahead of him lies the heavy task of leadership.

BaTlokwa of Tlokweng are a unique people, not least because they were among the last tribes of Tswana rootstock to settle in what is present-day Botswana, though this does make for an interesting narrative itself.

A little recorded story goes that along the way to Tlokweng, most probably before reaching Potschefstroom where greater numbers of them are found, BaTlokwa lost in war to Tswana ethnic cousins, BaPedi.
