Local Oil Company long overdue

News that the Botswana government is about to set up an oil company must be sweet music to everyone.

For a long time there has been instability in the energy sector that really exposed our vulnerability. Not a long time ago business in Botswana was disrupted by a national strike by long distance haulage truck drivers in South Africa. Because oil tankers could not bring fuel across the border into Botswana due to the strike, some petrol filling stations stayed for days without fuel. The same thing happened just before the festive season last year when a major refinery was closed in Talport due to maintenance works at the plant.

To compound matters, our fuel situation is in the hands of multinational corporations that are driven by profit and not necessarily stability.
