Let's conserve water

Batswana should take the warning that the Meteorological Services in Botswana and other experts on weather have put forward, as reported elsewhere in this publication, regarding rising temperatures, seriously. Such a warning comes at a time when the country has not been experiencing good rains.

While there might be very little or close to nothing that people can do to change the weather, there is certainly some cause of action that they could embark upon in the form of water conservation and environmental awareness that may militate against the impacts of the rise in temperature and harsh weather conditions.  Furthermore, they could avoid engaging in activities that contribute to high rate of water evaporation, and place emphasis on water conservation. Other activities that could mitigate against high temperatures could be by growing trees and plants that do not consume a lot of water so as to reduce loss of water through agricultural activities.

In another realm, water harvesting might prove a useful activity in efforts to conserve water as rainwater could not only be of use during period of low or poor rainfall but also for other activities such as gardening and vehicle washing. In the not so distant past, the country had a mammoth task to ward off and impending water crisis when the Gaborone Dam faced near dry spell due to high dropping water levels. In fact, the situation was so bad such that the Water Utilities Corporation had to impose water restrictions due to save the situation.
