Mmegi steps into 2008 with humility and restraint as it ends 23 years of a challenging existence. As we trudge into the 24th year, having endured the harshest criticism, even efforts at destabilisation by the powerful sections of Botswana society, we must give ourselves a pat on the back for having survived.

It has been an uphill climb from a virtual village leaflet in 1963 to a thriving commercial enterprise in the era of globalisation at the turn of the century.

But, as the American singer says, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going". We should pride ourselves in the battles that we have fought for press freedom and admit to the mistakes that we occasionally made by transgressing the rules and ethics of our profession that we so cherish.
