Let the best network compete

Yesterday, the state landline monopoly, Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) held a VIP launch for its mobile phone service ahead of the public rollout this weekend.

BTC becomes the third player in the mobile telephone industry after Mascom and Orange. The parastatal has gone mobile after a go-ahead from the Botswana Telecommunications Authority (BTA) under a new licensing regime dubbed Public Telecommunication Operator (PTO) or service neutral licenses. Under PTO, BTC, Mascom and Orange can offer mobile telephony, fixed telephony and Internet services under one license.

The launch of the new BTC Mobile offering has brought excitement to the public as it comes at a time when consumers are disillusioned by the high tariffs and poor network coverage during peak times by the two private operators.
