Khama should learn to accept democratic principles

The recent election of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) central committee has been lauded by observers as an indication of a mature party which holds democratic principles in high regard. This is not because one group won and another lost.

It is because of the simple reason that the party was faced with a moment of great division and managed to settle the dispute with a simple election. Other parties would have broken apart as we have observed in the past. Our country's history is littered with tales of paralysis, violence and splits from a certain political party after disputes. As a ruling party, it is extremely important for the BDP to negotiate its disputes amicably for the sake of the nation. A divided ruling party ultimately paralyses government functions.

That is why the BDP needs to put the elections behind it and forge a united front.
