Kgathi�s attack misplaced

The minister of Defence, Justice and Security Shaw Kgathi has really gotten out of control by accusing judges and magistrates of recklessly granting bail to accused persons who are not first offenders.

While they, like all other citizens have a right to hold opinions, ministers and senior government officials should be careful when expressing such as it can be difficult to separate their personal views from a government position.

Of course, there have been instances where judicial officers have granted bail to suspects in serious offences, but that does not justify a public outburst from a minister charged with ensuring that justice is dispensed equitably. Yes, there are incidents where a person was granted bail and went ahead to commit another offence while still on bail, but bail is granted with the guidance of the law.
