Keep boards of parastatals straight

Directorships of many parastatals and indeed leading private companies in Botswana have always intrigued those outside the secretive and egocentric government enclave.

Both opposition political parties and the civic society have always questioned the criteria used to appoint directors to the parastatals. 

Their contention has always been that these appointments, be they at chief executive level or to the board, were mainly based on political patronage and nepotism rather than merit. The government enclave political heavyweights have been known to prevail on major multinationals operating in the country to seek out their kind.
