Govt persists on 'His Master's Voice'

More than ever before, we live in an era of information and knowledge. Increasingly, people rely on information to navigate the world. With the right information, we know what food is healthier to eat, the right companies to invest in, and whether those in leadership deserve our vote in the next round of elections.

It is this latter point that seems to make our Botswana Democratic Party-led government determined to manage and filter information reaching the tax-paying public.  It is not enough that the government media - Radio Botswana, Botswana Television and The Daily News - have been reduced to propaganda tools that spew nothing more than where the next round of blankets will be distributed.  It is not enough that the BDP-majority Parliament saw fit to pass a law that exempts Btv and RB from regulation. 

Yesterday, a reporter and a photographer from Mmegi were prevented from entering the Office of the President where President of the Pan African Parliament, Bethel Amadi, was paying a courtesy call on President Ian Khama.Our team was told that it was not on a "list" of invited media. Yet Mmegi went there in response to a letter of invitation signed by the Principal Public Relations Officer of the National Assembly, Karabo Marumo.
