Govt Must Promote Indigenous Languages

Last week our sister publication - Mmegi - carried a story about the new line-up for news bulletins at state-owned Botswana Television (Btv). The new line-up only recognises Setswana as an indigenous language, which is totally unfair to other Batswana who may not speak the language.

With plenty of airtime that Btv has, we feel that other languages, like Sekalaka and Sekgalagadi, should be brought in to utilise the time that is otherwise wasted on irrelevant programmes. Some of the programmes Btv broadcasts are irrelevant in the sense that they do not educate inform or even entertain; yet they are given prime time. It is high time authorities came to accept that the other languages are as important to those who speak them as Setswana and English are important to Setswana and English speakers.
