Government must stop lying

For the umpteenth time, government has lied about a situation that directly matters to the nation. Lies have been told by government agents about the death of John Kalafits, Italy Setlampoloka and the illness of the Vice President Mompati Merafhe (although government denies vehemently that it never lied in the case of the VP).

Lately we have had a bucketful of lies being fed to the nation through government media. Almost daily, cabinet ministers and senior government officials go on record through state media and to tell the nation that the strike has not had any impact on service delivery and governance. In particular the Minister of Health, John Seakgosing, the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Mokgweetsi Masisi and Permanent Secretary to the President Eric Molale have said that service delivery has not been affected. The clip in which Seakgosing spoke about how the health sector was not affected and that it is operating at 99.5 percent was repeated several times on Botswana Television and Radio Botswana.

However, as became evident in court this week, government knew all along that service has been adversely affected but chose to feed untruths to the nation. Does government think so lowly of its people that it believes they can be lied to without asking questions? This is utter disrespect for the people who placed this government in a position of authority.
