Government Must Get Tough On Abusive Investors

Botswana's economy is dependent on mining, specifically diamonds. They account for about 30 percent of our GDP. Every little dent on the diamond trade leads to serious turbulence in the economy as exemplified in the recent fall in sales and the current economic downturn.

Government has seen the seriousness of such dependency and has been advocating for diversification for decades now. The diversification process does not seem to be gaining momentum to the desired extent, but no one should doubt that government is right to keep working at it.

Currently, government's major system has been to attract foreign investors into various industries. It is hoped that when investors get here, they will not only set up business to create employment for Batswana, but also pass on technical know-how and attract foreign currency. However, in its desperation to attract foreign investors, the government seems to have taken the saying 'Motlhopha ntsi ke yo o kgorang' to a new height. It would seem every foreigner from the so-called developed world who comes into this country is treated as a guest. This means that even unscrupulous individuals who have no interest whatsoever in developing this country get to enjoy the same benefits as legitimate investors.
