Good news from Cape Verde as war rages in Libya

As Africa grabbed world attention for the wrong reasons yesterday, because of events in Libya, there was a piece of good news from a little known country off the west coast of the continent.

The bloody battle for the control of Libya stood in stark contrast to the peaceful transitional elections in Cape Verde, a group of 10 islands and five islets in the Atlantic Ocean. In Libya, regime change is being effected through the barrel of the gun while they are doing it by means of the ballot in Cape Verde. But as usual, the Libyans are hogging the limelight while little mention is being made of the good tidings from Cape Verde.

In a nutshell, Cape Verde is a former Portuguese colony that gained independence in 1975. The archipelago has less that 600,000 people. Most importantly, in 2008, it became the second country after Botswana to be declared a middle-income economy out of 50 least developed nations. Like Botswana, it has enjoyed political stability and high economic growth since independence.
