Good for BURS!

The Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) reported a record P16 billion in collected taxes.

This revenue is realised mainly from income tax, value-added tax (VAT), fuel levy, the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and other sources.We learn that this represents a 33.9 percent increase from the last financial year. This is a highly commendable job on the part of BURS.

The importance of efficient collection of tax cannot be over-emphasised, particularly in a mono-economy like ours. In fact, many countries, including highly developed ones, attach great importance to this exercise. It is inspiring to note that our government has finally woken up to that realisation.
