The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) this week started voter registration for the 2009 general elections. This time around, the registration has come early, as has been the desire of political parties, voters and other stakeholders for a long time.

We believe the early registration will afford the IEC the opportunity to carry out a thorough logistics plan to ensure that the 2009 general elections are conducted smoothly.

But except for the call by the IEC, there has been very little happening to encourage people to register for elections lately. On the political front, there have been very few encouraging signs to restore public confidence in the electoral process. Opposition parties largely remain a disorganised lot with the main opposition torn asunder, attempts to forge broader opposition unity have crumbled, while the ruling party is decidedly led by a faction.
