Ghana does Africa proud

Ghanaians went to the polls last Sunday in what turned out to be one of the most free, fair and peaceful elections in Africa.

Though the results of the closely fought presidential race were close to call at the time of going to press, observers have pronounced the elections as a good example in a continent riddled with poll rigging, protests, violence, death and chaos. There was a strong possibility of a re-run.  But that is to be expected in a functioning democracy.

Former Nigerian head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, who headed the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) observer group, praised Ghana for the leading role in the nurturing of democracy in Africa. The Ghanaian poll was a far cry from the bloody and discredited elections witnessed lately in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Nigeria.
