Gabz fm should not pander to busybodies

It has been widely reported that an activist of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party has registered a complaint with the management of Gabz fm that his party president has been unfairly maligned in one radio programme.

There is nothing wrong with a party complaining when it feels that its rights are being trampled upon. However, the trouble is that in their jostling for political space and favourable coverage in an election year, nitpicking political parties will complain of just about anything. Having been on the airwaves of presumably free expression for a while now, Gabz fm is aware of this.

Tactics differ in this war for the hearts and minds of voters. Some - liberals and democrats among them - choose the power of persuasion in which open discourse is the main tool. Others - tyrants and fascists in their lead - dispense with such idle argument and take the route of 'might is right' and beat everyone into submission.
