Finally, President Khama is engaging the world

At first, it appeared as if President Ian Khama was reluctant to travel outside Botswana on state matters.

On a number of occasions, President Khama relied on his Vice President, Momati Merafhe, to travel abroad. As a nation, we were worried that President Khama is delegating this important function to his number two.

It is not that we doubted the Vice President's capability in dealing with such matters. We believe that the President, as the nation's chief executive officer, should take the leading role in building relationships, particularly with our most important allies. We are heartened that of late the President seems to be on a drive to visit some of these important allies. Two weeks ago, the President was in South Africa, which everybody knows is our neighbour and most important economic ally. We are told that a number of critical issues were discussed at the South African meeting and it will not be long before we see the results of that important meeting.
