Fighting corruption requires strong political opposition

Botswana's political parties are currently engrossed in preparations for the October 2009 general elections. Once more, the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is expected to win easily.

General elections generally serve as a test of the effective operation of multi-party democracy. In Botswana, formation of political parties does not require much effort.

However, living up to the expectations of opposition political parties is no child's play.
The opposition political parties are generally under-resourced and they do not benefit from government assistance for the running of their political campaigns.
