Election fraud: This is a wake up call

In our edition yesterday, there was a disturbing report that an official of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) allegedly engaged in what amounts to election registration fraud.

After nine general elections conducted in this country since 1965, we thought we were too smart for this type of base election chicanery. When the Zimbabwean elections were marred by violence, most of us thought it will not happen here.

In the April 2009 general elections in South Africa, an officer of the IEC was caught stuffing filled-up ballots into the ballot boxes. Many people cringed but those of us who have faith in our system felt that this incident was peculiar to new democracies like South Africa. We even fell short of saying that they should come here for tutorials.
