Congratulations to NACA

At long last, the government has realised that its holier-than-thou stance on sexuality is defeatist in the face of the onslaught of HIV/AIDS.

We understand that the National AIDS Coordinating Agency (NACA) has invited gay and lesbian organisations to its on-going stakeholders conference, NHASORC II. We welcome this radical departure from regarding people of such sexuality as deviants and treating them as though they were unworthy of life. We salute this development for several reasons, principal among which is the fact that - as any sexologist knows - the only universal in human sexuality is variability.

We have always maintained that HIV/AIDS demanded a holistic approach, including engaging with people of different sexual orientations, among them gays and lesbians. While our laws do not recognise these people, the reality is that they live in our communities and can be ignored only at society's own peril.
