Clinics takeover was ill-advised

The controversial move by government to take over clinics a year ago is now proving that it was a wrong move that is going to worsen service delivery in public health facilities.

Just this week, the chairperson of Kweneng District Council (KDC) has revealed that they are overwhelmed with workload because government has dumped clinical waste on them because they did not budget for the service.

Obviously, this is a problem throughout the country and it has serious repercussions.  We all know that district councils have for a long time been struggling to perform their daily duties such as revenue collection, distribution of food and books in schools, as well as collection of garbage, and the grading and maintenance of gravel roads.  All these were due to constraints such as shortage of resources and manpower.  It was unfair for government to take over clinics from councils, only for the same government to say it did not budget for some services provided by clinics.  Obviously, councils too were not prepared or did not budget for the disposal of clinical waste, for instance.  What is likely to happen in this situation is that there will be an increase in cases of corruption throughout the country, as some officers and business people would take advantage of this and connive to rob government.
