Call for overhaul of our education system

Last week, the long awaited Committee of Inquiry into the Conduct of the 2010 Examinations was released to the public. We have always argued that the Ministry of Education and the entire education system were failing young Batswana.

This report provides a bird's eye view of the chaotic state of the situation at the heart of the education system. It boils down to primarily one thing, and that is that the way the Minister of Education and Skills Development, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, dealt with the crisis was characterised by lack of foresight, especially at a critical time of examinations last year. Perhaps true to character (or lack of it), the minister would not accept any blame for the bedlam and mayhem that came to identify her ministry, as seen from the way she pointed the probe anywhere but herself during the inquiry.

In doing so, she behaved like one more concerned about her image at the Office of the President than discharging her job with due diligence, so much that she ended up misleading the President and the nation in the tragic train of errors that ensued. But for now, the less said about that sorrowful chapter in Venson-Moitoi's public career, the better. Suffice it to say she failed the test! Over to another issue, albeit one still to do with education.Over the last few years, the Department of Tertiary Education Financing has failed to deliver on its mandate of providing sponsorship to young Batswana timeously. In the course of that time, young people have had to queue up for weeks on end to have their applications for sponsorship processed. Even as we write this, the exceptional ineptitude of this crucial department continues.
