Btv should broadcast Parliament debates

On June 16 Btv broadcast a live football match between civil servants and members of the cabinet. It was not the first to be aired. The game was part of civil service commemorations that lasted for a week.

It was also a wrap-up to the events that marked the commemorations, which  were also broadcast live on Btv. The football match was a good initiative to enable the public to see their leaders in a relaxed mood, not in business suits or political regalia. We hope that in future we will see more of our leaders interacting with the electorate, as we recently saw the Vice President attending a spin city event where he even boarded one of the cars.

The civil service commemorations and the football match came at a time when there are increasing calls for a live broadcast of parliamentary debates on the national television. Such requests have been rejected by the government on grounds that there are no resources to execute the initiative. Even worse, the government has refused to do the live broadcast on Radio Botswana citing the same reasons.
