Botswana on the verge of land crisis

Last year, the nation learnt that the number of Batswana on the land allocation waiting list across the country is more than the population of Botswana. The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Lands and Housing, Thato Raphaka, revealed this when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Raphaka disclosed that the list of Batswana who are waiting to be allocated land has surpassed the 2,1 million population of Botswana. He pleaded with the PAC to understand that these lists were long because desperate people applied at various land boards.

Raphaka’s explanation was that one name could appear in 10 other Land Boards and thereby creating a false waiting list. But who can blame the desperate Batswana for doing that? It is a known fact that it can take more than two decades for an applicant to be allocated land. In some places like Francistown, thousands of people have applied for plots in the early 1990s and they are still awaiting allocation.
