BGCSE and our social strata

The results of the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations have been released, making us almost forget the unpalatable story behind them.

We note that parents whose children did well deserve a word of credit from all of us because while it is not an easy task raising a child, teenagers often provide added complexities to good parenting.  That is why the students who did well have to be praised for their performance.

However, as a nation, whenever examination results are released, we ought to scrutinise them carefully in order to understand the socio-political circumstances surrounding them.  Afterall, these are not just numbers, they relate to real human beings.  For example, we know that year in and year out, students who emerge the best in the country often come from the same schools as the best students of previous years.  Generally, these are schools along the more urbanised eastern belt of the country.  It is no coincidence that this region is also where the top crust of our socio-economic structure is located.
