Before we blame criminals, let us look at ourselves

It was always going to be a matter of time before criminals impersonate officers of the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS). After all the DIS seems to be the only security outfit whose agents are allowed to violate people's privacy without a search warrant or producing any identity.

There are reports that in Mahalapye, Palapye, Selebi-Phikwe and Gaborone, some criminal elements who masquerade as DIS agents were arrested, charged and convicted by a court of law. It would seem the sole aim of these criminals was to gain entry into properties for the sole purpose of stealing. According to the DIS, in all the cases, the criminals claimed that they were looking for certain individuals. Fortunately, these unscrupulous characters were apprehended before they could carry out their criminal acts.

It is possible that we could be reacting when the horse has already bolted from the stable. Before these criminals were apprehended, it is likely that many other people could have fallen victim and we may never know the number.
