BDP must put its electoral system in order

Granted, the inner-party electioneering is a new concept within the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). Before the 2004 general elections, the BDP replaced the archaic electoral college with Bulela Ditswe - primary elections.

The college system was found to be absolutely undemocratic as it concentrated electoral power in the hands of few people in the party. The introduction of Bulela Ditswe was therefore rightly heralded as a progressive development. However, that system, like any competitive one, has got its dangers if not properly handled. And the only way to ensure that it serves its purpose well is to try and make it as fair and transparent as humanly possible.
