BDP MPs must defy the monolith

After fierce resistance from the ruling party, there is hope that Botswana might have the much-needed Freedom of Information Act (FIA).

Though we are still a long way off, the good news is that the Private Members Bill, that is likely to be moved by Botswana Congress Party (BCP) president Dumelang Saleshando in the next session of Parliament in February, appears to enjoy support from across the political divide.

At least that is what we get from last week's breakfast seminar on the draft FIA organised for MPs by MISA Botswana. Nonetheless, we must express our fears that the process of getting a FIA could be torpedoed midstream. We know that when all said and done, the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) will have the final say in this seminal development. But this is a party that has a stranglehold on Parliament and can muster the numbers to thwart a legislative course that it does not like.
