BDP divisions bad for

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) chairman, Daniel Kwelagobe, over the weekend spoke out against the abuse of party procedure for the sake of political expediency.

Kwelagobe was defending the partys constitution in tandem with what his supporters have been advocating. Ironically President Ian Khama at the weekend also spoke about the current events in the party. Khama indicated that he is also interested in pushing women into positions of leadership. It is reported that a rally dominated by the Barata-phathi was held in Matshelagabedi.

We would like to encourage Kwelagobe and his supporters to stick to their guns because their stance is not only legitimate but also principled by any standard. The party constitution, like any constitution, needs to be defended at all costs and should not be manipulated to suit the whims of various vested interests. Everyone expects discipline and organizational efficiency in any ruling party to be above board and serve as a mirror of how its runs the affairs of the state. In other words, whatever happens in the party should be seen as an example of what is happening in government. If we are to use this view, then the propensity of those in the leadership of the party to subject the party constitution to their narrow considerations is a bad omen for the entire nation. We think therefore that Kwelagobe and his supporters should not sacrifice their democratic rights, under the BDP constitution, and stand for party positions without fear of reprisals.
