BCL Mine a litmus test for govt

Any minute now, the 6,000-plus workers at BCL Mine will receive memos that traditionally, the world over, have engendered deep concern and depression. BCL Mine is in trouble.

By some estimates it owes up to P900 million in debts around the region and with base metal prices still at multi-year lows, the base metal giant is still in the woods for now.

Futures hang in limbo for the workers, their families, their obligations, the schools they send their children to, the shops they buy from, the transport they use. The ripple effect from the memos at BCL will be felt far and wide, hurting local communities, regional stability and national coffers.
