All hands on deck for public service

In a single issue and on the very same page, we yesterday carried three heart-breaking stories of the dire material inadequacies facing our public sector. In one, freezing New Xade children were reported to be abandoning school due to their council’s failure to provide them with uniforms, while in another, married couples in the police service were confirmed to be sharing houses with their single colleagues at Gaborone West Police Station.

The last piece was on Mokobaxane teachers who are forced to catch kombis and other transport in order to relieve themselves, as their toilets at Mokoboxane Primary School are miniscule.

The common thread in the three tragedies is the failure of the effective transmission of taxpayer funds, through processes, to beneficiaries and the resultant misery of Batswana at the tail end.
