A victory of good over evil

It has now become general news that a shipload of weaponry destined for landlocked Zimbabwe is wandering off the coast of southern Africa. By the time of going to press, the An Yue Jiang and its deadly cargo had been denied landing rights by South Africa and Mozambique. It was reportedly on its way to Angola.

And thus what should have been a quiet acquisition by the government of President Robert Mugabe has been exposed by an alert media, an outspoken political movement, a radically independent judicial system and an active NGO community.
While the media reported about the shipment when it entered South African waters early last week, the civil society movements that have coalesced around the Zimbabwean crisis soon took up the issue in the sub-continent.

It is not the sort of publicity the Chinese and Zimbabwean governments wanted. The ship was met with active rejection by citizens who took up the matter with the courts who in turn embargoed the passage of the weapons through South African territory. The South African unions promised not to allow its workers to unload the weapons if the ship was allowed to dock. All these, obviously not to the wishes of President Thabo Mbeki!
