Zim power deal runs aground

The planned US$8 million power deal through which Botswana was to access 40 megawatts of power from a Bulawayo thermal power station is off the cards due to the "closure of a window of opportunity," Mmegi has established.

Yesterday, authoritative sources told Mmegi the "window of opportunity" was the period stretching from 2009 to 2010 when Botswana was most desperate to plug a domestic power supply shortfall that was crippling the economy.

The sources said thanks to various initiatives, only a trying winter season now stood between the country and 2012 when the first unit of the 600MW Morupule B power station will come on line, virtually negating the need for the Zimbabwe deal.
