The country’s youth have sounded the alarm on rampant unemployment, telling senior Finance ministry officials, including Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe, at a budget pitso on Tuesday, that bold reforms are required beyond “empty rhetoric”.

Gaolathe and his technocrats earlier this week wrapped the last of three budget pitsos held as part of the annual consultative meetings ahead of the budget next month.

Engaging with the younger generation at the Youth Pitso in Gaborone, the Finance ministry officials found themselves under fire from frustrated citizens who demanded that greater action is required for economic empowerment, beyond the rhetoric.

For too long, the state of many public schools has been a source of shame. We have all seen the pictures and heard the stories of broken windows, unreliable water and electricity, topped by classrooms that are not fit for proper learning. The establishment of the Education Infrastructure and Management Company Ltd (EIMC) signals that authorities are finally ready to take this problem seriously.
