World Soccer Cup prompts ambitious airports programme

The Department of Civil Aviation is rolling out an ambitious programme to upgrade its airports and rebuild key facilities in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Soccer Cup to be hosted by neighbouring South Africa, the Director of Civil Aviation, Olefile Moakofi, has said.

The 'linchpin' of the programme is the construction of a new and bigger terminal building at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKA), which is scheduled to begin just after New Year's Day next year and completed by Christmas 2009. 

In an interview with Business Today, Moakofi said the SSKA project was at the tendering stage and that it would take "a while" to complete as it had to conform to rigorous international standards.
