Work permit holders continue to decrease

The total number of work permit holders continues to drop on the back of the new stringent requirement for applications coupled with the large number of Zimbabwean immigrants returning home.

Latest figures released by Statistics Botswana (SB) show that work permit holders decreased from 20, 118 in June 2010, to 17, 420 by September before further slightly going down again to 17, 286 by December last year.

The formation of the inclusive government two years ago, as well the dollarisation of the currency, has seen the Zimbabwean economy stabilise leading to some of the so-called "economic refugees" in Botswana to go back home.
