Wildlfe Officials And Bird Group Disagree Over Threat

A wildlife official in Maun says the new copper mine in the wildlife rich area is no threat to wildlife tourism.

However, Birdlife officials in Gaborone fear for birds' species in the nearby Lake Ngami, home to tens of thousands of water birds including the endangered species, the kori bastard.

Australian company Discovery Metals this week announced it has found a new copper zone of 2km at its Maun copper project in Botswana. But wildlife coordinator for the region Sibangani Mosojane says the copper area is nowhere near the protected areas.
Maun region is home to the famous Okavango Delta, and the area is alive with hundreds of wildlife species, including elephants, buffaloes, lions, and antelopes. "There is no immediate threat to wildlife because the area being talked about is in a cattle grazing area, some 35 km outside Lake Ngami.
