Wholesale, retail sector boom - survey

The wholesale and trade industry has grown exponentially since 2002 indicating a healthy competition in the sector with market concentration being recorded in mining and quarrying; electricity, gas and water; and international organisation establishments, a survey has shown.

According to the results of the 2006/07 Census of Enterprises and Establishments(CEE), the majority of enumerated establishments engaged in wholesale and retail trade (93.2 per cent), manufacturing (90.7  percent), hotels and restaurants (97.6 percent) and agriculture activities (95.2 percent) had an annual turnover of P5 million or less and could therefore be classified as SMMEs.

Speaking at the briefing on the survey in Gaborone last week, CSO acting government statistician, Malebogo Kerakeng said that the specific objectives for the study are to collect benchmark data for economic statistics and to update the Enterprises and Establishments Register which is used as a framework for economic statistics surveys.
