Vibrant Textile Industry Could Be The Key - Mayor

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The textile industry in Selebi-Phikwe has the potential to salvage the town from the ashes but is presently failing to support the town's economy.

While men in the town have entirely relied on the mine for employment, their female counterparts on the other hand have curved a niche in the not-so-promising textile industry that has proved to be not economically viable but is the last resort, which enables them to survive the biting effects of inflation. Mayor Benjamin Bagayi over the weekend expressed worry over the status of the textile industry in the town, saying it must be revived and diversified for the benefit of the people.

He noted that nobody is to blame for the economic situation in Phikwe and that it is time for everyone to embark on holistic and deliberate interventions to give the mining town a new lease of life. Bagayi also said there is a serious need to change the mindset of the country's leaders so that they establish deliberate policies specifically tailor-made for the town.  He said money is not a problem, as many people tend to think.
