Vaka on Sanlam: a first for courage and rectitude

On Tuesday night, former BIHL CEO, Regina Sikalesele-Vaka, stunned guests at her farewell dinner when she suddenly accused her former employer of several transgressions, among them expatriating profits from Botswana to develop other economies and hostility towards management.

In an eleven-page diatribe that lasted approximately 40 minutes, Sikalesele-Vaka lambasted Sanlam for corporate citizen irresponsibility for channelling all profits made by BIHL towards the group's expansion in other countries while BIHL remains stagnant.

She accused Sanlam of over-controlling the policy at BIHL and running the company from its headquarters in Cape Town over the heads of qualified and experienced Batswana with proven ability.  Vaka-Sikalesele expressed her unhappiness at Sanlam's policy of not allowing its subsidiaries to expand into the rest of Africa in order to protect Sanlam from direct competition with them. She believes the restriction on expanding outside Botswana greatly curtails future growth opportunities and has a negative impact on the sustainability of the BIHL group at a time when Sanlam is using profits from Botswana on an active expansion drive across the continent, which has seen the company recently set up shop in Nigeria, Uganda and Malawi.
