Underutilised Dry Port reopens

The underutilised Botswana Dry Port in Walvis Bay, Namibia, owned and managed by Botswana Railways’ subsidiary, Sea Rail Botswana is back in operation after being closed for some time.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), Ompone Kereteletswe told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) this week that the port has been closed for business due to some teething problems, which the relevant ministries from both Botswana and Namibia had resolved.

“There was a problem, which took a long time to be resolved.  As a country we wanted to have a structure at the port in addition to the contract to proof our existence there. I can now assure that the port has started to operate,” he added. However, Kereteletswe also urged local businesses to utilise the port noting that since the port opened for business, the only commodity received at the port was second hand cars.
