Transporters feel fuel price hike squeeze

SEROWE: The recent fuel price hikes have hit transporters hard with many in Serowe wondering whether they will survive in the current business environment.

Most transporters want fares to be increased after two fuel price hikes in as many months. Taxi and combi owners in Serowe say their profit margins have drastically reduced and they are not sure whether they will stay in business for long. Combi driver, Sour Ntwakgolo complained that the fuel price increases are dragging his business down since he now works only for fuel without making any profit. "Petrol price increase has really brought my business down. I don't make any profit now. Before the increase, P200 was enough for fuel per day but now I have to fill with P300 each day," said a very concerned Ntwakgolo.

Another taxi driver, Gaamangwe Tshenolo suggested that the combi and taxi fares should be increased to cushion transporters from the high fuel prices. "There is no businesses in Serowe. Fares should be increased to P5 for ordinary taxi and P25 for taxi specials. Combi fares maybe increased to P4. I suggest these fares because fuel prices have been increased twice in one month and if it is to be increased again without passenger fare increase, our businesses will be finished," said Tshenolo.
