Top diamantaire says Botswana could equal Belgium

The Chairman of the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA), Moti Ganz, says their decision to hold their 31st Meeting in Gaborone instead of Dubai is proof that diamond manufacturers have confidence in the potential of Botswana emerging as a successful world diamond centre.

Speaking at the 2011 Diamond Gala Dinner at GICC Tuesday night, Ganz said although Dubai offered far more incentives than Botswana, they chose to invest in the diamond-rich country where over US$300 million was invested to develop the diamond industry over the last the years.

"We decided Botswana is the future of diamonds," Ganz said. "Dubai offers a 50-percent tax holiday for over 30 years, empty offices, direct routes, but we decided what is important is to be here where the diamonds are. We think Botswana can be just as successful as Belgium."
