The street vendors of Khwai rake in forex

KHWAI: Street vendors in this remote tourist village of 400 are an enterprising lot who trade in the world's leading currencies. Because there are no shops here, the street vendors are benefiting from the disposable incomes of thousands of tourists who pass through.

With their village sandwiched between the Okavango Delta and Chobe River, two of Botswana's leading tourist destinations, the street vendors of Khwai are making brisk business.

One of them, Tina Tameti, says they sell items such as cigarettes, cold beer, mineral water and groceries to passing tourists who mainly pay in foreign currency.
