Despite government’s efforts to come up with initiatives and programmes aimed at eradicating poverty and creating jobs, the country still experiences abject poverty, inequality and high unemployment rates. In the past two years employment registered a growth rate of a mere 0.7 percent creating 2,207 jobs between 2013 and 2015 out of 40,000 new entrants to the labour force. To address the unemployment issue, Business Week Staffer PAULINE DIKUELO believes that there is no need to reinvent the wheel, instead to identify critical steps missing in the implementation of identified policies and strategies

Some of the recommendations have existed in the government policy space for some time, but have not been implemented. It is apparent that the country lacks clear and targeted strategies that have over the years led to the funding of unsuccessful initiatives, which could have created employment.

During the summit, the Vice President, Mokgweetsi Masisi also affirmed that project management and implementation have been a major challenge in the delivery of critical national projects necessitation, strengthening of project monitoring by government suggesting the need to reinvent government for effective delivery of public services. He said that one of the challenges has been ineffective processes such as weak project management and monitoring, time challenges issuance of permits and bureaucratic tendering system. Masisi also encouraged the private sector to work together with government to drive the job creation agenda.
