The environment takes centre stage in Phikwe

The long-running debate around pollution in Selebi-Phikwe has again come to the fore due, in large part, to the preliminary results of studies into how emissions from BCL Mine are impacting the copper and nickel mining town.

Since its establishment in the 1970s, BCL Mine has battled with the flip side of its economic contribution to Selebi-Phikwe and the country as a whole - the control and reduction of emissions from its operations. The mine has implemented various systems and introduced technologies designed to reduce its impact on the environment - particularly through the air in Selebi-Phikwe and its environs.

The bigger picture is that BCL Mine is the country's second biggest employer and the Botswana Power Corporation's (BPC) single biggest customer. It is also among the biggest contributors in terms of corporate social responsibility programmes.
