Corporate cloak and dagger tactics are said to be behind Shield Security's recent decision to close, with industry sources alleging that the move was meant to sidestep a recent regulatory decision barring the company's acquisition by G4S Botswana.

The Competition Authority, which recently rejected the planned acquisition, has launched a probe into the decision to close, releasing a strongly worded statement on Wednesday questioning why a profitable business should throw 1 300 workers onto the streets. Simultaneously, Security Association of Botswana executives say they are equally puzzled by the development. The association has engaged a leading union to provide expertise on saving jobs at Shield Security.
